Mounting and installation types.

Frameless glass balustrades (or balcony glass) are mounted in many different ways depending on factors like the location (internal or external) the mounting surface, the design intent, safety factors and budget considerations.

The most common installation types are spigots, channel mount and side or face fixed.

Frameless glass pool fence with polished chrome spigots

Spigots

By far the most common method to secure your glass balustrade. Spigots are small ‘feet’ attached to the bottom of the glass and provide the necessary support to hold the glass in place. Spigots can be used for indoor and outdoor applications and they offer a number of different mounting options. Typically spigots are either core drilled into a concrete slab, like the surround of a pool or surface fixed onto the frame of a deck or the tiled area on a balcony. This style of mounting is cost effective, versatile and allows for just about any glass balustrade layout.

Face fixed glass balustrade in low iron glass

Side fix/face fix

Another way to mount a frameless glass pool fence is to the side or face of the pool area. This changes the position of the glass and is typically employed when there isn’t sufficient space to use spigots, where the shape or structure doesn’t provide enough fixing points or as a design preference.

To face fix a glass pool fence, a threaded rod is secured into the concrete slab or framing and glass is secured with round buttons or caps to hold it in place.

Channel mount glass balustrade

Channel mount

Another way to secure your frameless glass balustrade is to set it into a channel. The channel can be created by forming a rebate in the concrete slab or with a prefabricated aluminium channel bolted down to the surface of your balcony or deck.

Using a channel system for your frameless glass balustrade requires some consultation in the planning phase, as many factors must be considered before construction begins.

A channel-mounted glass balustrade is used for both indoor and outdoor applications universally.

Polished ed chrome round handrail

Top rails & handrails

In Australia, frameless glass balustrades are required to have a top rail or handrail when there is a fall greater than 1m.

Top rails and handrails are available in different sizes, shapes and materials. A top rail is fitted on top of the glass and fixed to the adjoining walls.

A handrail is mounted on specially designed brackets fixed to the glass’s face. Generally, most glass balustrades require only a small, stainless steel top rail to meet compliance requirements.

ClearShield® Glass Protection.

ClearShield® is a one time, permanent glass coating that repels dirt, grime and bacteria whilst reducing cleaning frequency by up to 80%. It promotes a hygienic environment, extends glass life and saves money by eliminating the need for chemical sprays and harsh cleaning products.

Glass types.

Standard Clear Glass

Standard clear

A grade 12mm thick toughened safety glass. The most commonly used glass for frameless pool fences.n Standard clear glass has a slight green hue and darkish edges.

Low iron ultra clear glass

Low iron ultra clear

The designer’s choice due to the step up in quality. Low iron glass offers superior clarity. The colour resembles the transparency of window glass with a blue hue along the edges.

Frosted glass

Frosted (acid etched)

For glass balustrades, when privacy is important, acid-etched glass allows the light to pass through but provides a visual barrier from an external perspective. Acid-etched glass has an opaque appearance with darkish edges.

12mm frosted low iron acid etched glass

Frosted (low iron acid etched)

Low iron acid etched glass provides an element of privacy whilst offering superior clarity. The appearance is opaque with a light blue hue along the edges.

Grey toughened glass

Grey glass

Grey glass offers a chic, contemporary look with its smoky hue, providing both style and privacy. Its light-filtering properties create a soft, elegant ambience in any space.

Clear toughened glass

Toughened laminated engineered glass

Toughened laminated glass is the answer for glass balustrades where a top rail isn’t desired. This type of glass offers an additional layer of safety because if breakage occurs, the glass will remain in place and continue to provide fall protection.

Thank you to Brett and team for a great result! About a year ago I sought quotes for a replacement shower screen. The 3 quotes were comparable within a $100 or so of each other, but what set Infinity Glass apart was the attention to detail. Brett explained to me that the existing screen had some design concerns and that there was a better way to manage the door. This attention to detail continued at the time of installation when the installers explained some pre-work that I could do to get a solid result. The installation was seamless and they kindly fit around our schedule. I wanted to wait a year before writing a review, and 1 year later I can confidently say the shower screen is still superb. Thank you Brett and team and I will be using you again for future needs. 5 stars.
